Originally, the Sorgues plain was a vast swamp fed by the Sorgue, a river coming from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.

For several years, men tried to clean up this space and this is how the Vaucluse canal was dug around 900 allowing the city to be created.

The fountains

The water is now under control, it is used to irrigate the surrounding agricultural fields and to supply the fountains. At the time there were pumps and 7 public fountains with drinking water available to residents and 8 fountains that were fed by the Griffon Canal, a derivative of the Vaucluse Canal. The water in this canal was not drinkable and was therefore used for laundry and dishes, although some drank it with full knowledge of the risks.

Paddlewheels

These waterways were used for industrial purposes thanks to the driving force of water as early as the 13th century, with the breeding of silkworms, factories appeared and it was in the 14th and 15th centuries that Sorgues saw the rise of paper mills, mills, mills for silk, milling and also for treading fabrics. In the 19th century, industry was in full swing and water wheels multiplied along the canals and supplied copper rolling mills, oil mills, flour mills, starch factories, whetstone factories, sharpening stone factories, sharpening stone factories, factories in Garance, soda ash factory and many others.
