A castle in the heart of Sorgues
Benefiting from an advantageous strategic location, Sorgues saw the arrival of numerous aristocratic and bourgeois families. Thus, twenty exceptional homes and castles were built, including Château Saint-Hubert.
The construction of the castle
The construction project was launched on October 22, 1782, ordered by Pierre Jean Baptiste Dominique de Vernety, king's gentleman, from a large family of lawyers from Avignon. The Pope, sovereign of the Comtat Venaissin, after having ennobled Pierre de Vernety in 1756, erected the Saint-Hubert estate into a marquisate in a brief apostolical of November 13, 1787. Over the centuries the castle knew several owners, then the city of Sorgues recovered it and transformed it into a hospice for the poor in 1936 and finally into a retirement home.
The castle has a beautiful facade with a rounded central pavilion, crowned by a balustrade decorated with firepots. The noble floor is reached by a double revolution staircase made of Louis XVIII ironwork. At the back, the real distribution of the rooms, on 3 floors, appears.
The beautiful facade and roof of Château Saint-Hubert have been classified as Historic Monuments since October 28, 1949!

Garden art
The castle overlooks the 50-hectare garden, which is now a municipal park open to all.
The layout of the garden is very much inspired by the landscape style, which was at its height at the time. The aim of the latter was to create a place for living and contemplation, so the design was designed so that the garden provides several emotions for the walker who goes from the undergrowth to the grass, from shade to light, from freshness to heat, inviting him to stroll and relax.
In the 20th century, we are seeing more and more green spaces appear in cities, a subject that is becoming more and more important in new urban spaces. A place for meetings, games and sports practices, the Château Saint-Hubert garden is today a major asset for the well-being of residents.
