The Chapel that can be seen today only dates from 1842. Indeed, black penitents have known several buildings since their creation in 1566. First there was a chapel behind the Church of Our Lady of Nazareth that they occupied for nearly 200 years and then, in the 18th century, they decided to move into a new building that they were only going to use for forty years since it was going to be confiscated from them and then sold during the French Revolution.

It was therefore only in 1842 that they succeeded in finding land, ceded by the rector of the Penitents, to build the Chapel of Black Penitents that we still know today. Finally, it was the First World War, then the death of Canon Laporte, that overcame the activity of black penitents in Monteux.

Today, the chapel continues to receive the public since every year exhibitions and other cultural activities take place in this place!
