The history of Saint-Gens

Gens is said to have been born in Monteux in the 12th century in a peasant family. As an adult he became a shepherd but was driven out of the city after a scene of quarrel with residents. Later, Monteux will experience a long period of drought, and will be saved by the shepherd whom they had chased away some time ago. In fact, Gens, after a procession around the city, makes the rain fall, one of the three miracles he will perform in his life. Since his death, the Montilians have organized a pilgrimage to the sanctuary every year on the day of his death. True legend, it is said that it is prayed in all the villages of Provence to make the rain fall.

A tradition that has been perpetuated for centuries

To honor the Patron Saint of Monteux, a pilgrimage has been organized for centuries to pay tribute to him. Thus, the Montilians meet every year on the church square to then travel the symbolic 17 km to Beaucet, with the saint and his escort, composed of porters and riders.

On the occasion of the Great Pilgrimage of Saint Gens in 2010, the restored statue of Saint Gens was placed in front of the Porte Neuve, on a base entirely made of Beaucet stone (from the Saint Gens quarry, above the hermitage). At its feet, a fountain symbolizes the miraculous source of the hermitage.
