The History of Fountains
Pernes-les-Fontaines has a very intimate relationship with water. Birthplace of the illustrious Louis Giraud, creator of the Carpentras Canal, it is crossed by this structure but also by the Nesque, which descends from the slopes of Mont-Ventoux through sumptuous throats.
Although some date from the 15th century, the decisive element in the history of these fountains was the discovery by a sorcerer in the 18th century of a gigantic water source in the north-east of the city following a major episode of drought in the area. This discovery will allow the inhabitants to never run out of water again and will create a dynamic of mutual aid and solidarity since the idea of installing a fountain in every street in the town will see the light of day thanks to the participation of everyone. So, little by little, Pernes saw dozens and dozens of them flourish on the streets as well as on the private properties of the most affluent Pernes.

The 41 fountains tourist circuit
Since then, there have been around forty fountains accessible in the historic center and it is estimated that there are around sixty scattered in the gardens and courtyards of houses and mansions. Porte du Ventoux Tourisme invites you to discover this history through a visit to the city of Pernes-les-Fontaines, using our tourist circuit that will allow you to discover the rich heritage it contains.
