The History of Fountains
Pernes-les-Fontaines has a very close relationship with water. It is the birthplace of the illustrious Louis Giraud, creator of the Carpentras Canal, which crosses the town and is also fed by the Nesque River, rushing down the slopes of Mont Ventoux through its magnificent gorges.
Although some fountains date back to the 15th century, the most decisive moment in the history of these fountains came with the discovery of a massive water source in the northeast of the town by a water diviner in the 18th century. This discovery followed a major drought in the area, and it ensured that the residents would never run out of water again. It also fostered a spirit of mutual aid and solidarity, as the idea to install a fountain in every street of the town came to fruition with the participation of the entire community. Over time, dozens of fountains sprang up along the streets and even on the private properties of the wealthiest citizens of Pernes-les-Fontaines.
