Under the influence of the popes in the 12th century, a castle was built in the heart of the city of Monteux and a tower was attached to it: The Clementine Tower, named this way in tribute to Pope Clement V, since the Palace of the Popes was not yet built, he would have lived there a few times. Over the centuries, this monument will welcome great personalities of the time, but the highlight of this building will be the terrible fire in 1415 which destroyed the entire castle, leaving only the Clementine Tower standing.

Twenty-eight meters tall and solid with eight meters wide and walls that are two meters thick, the tower offered an impressive view of the whole city and the plain of Comtat Venaissin. Its demolition was frequently requested, but never granted, as the historical memories associated with it are numerous.

The Tower was also classified as a Historic Monument on January 8, 1910!
