Spanning the Ouvèze, the bridge is an emblematic monument since in addition to giving its name to the city in 1063, it also appears on the coat of arms (Azure with a silver bridge with three arches, masonry of sand, supporting a silver cross, all on a river undulating with silver and sinople).
Formerly the bridge was equipped with a lookout, parapets and loopholes, watch the surroundings and defend the passage to the city and the castle that the Count of Toulouse had built. Over the centuries, the north-south communication axis has been used by many traders, it is called the Via Agrippa. The bridge therefore becomes a toll, a tax is introduced to be able to cross it. This route is also used by the numerous pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela.
