In contesting the coup organized by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the inhabitants of the city met in this beautiful house that was the Café de la Montagne on December 2, 1851, before taking over the Town Hall two days later.

They were quickly put out of harm's way by the 16th Gendarmerie Legion. A dozen Bédarridais were sentenced to various sentences, such as deportation to Algeria for some or to internment in different departments for others.
