Too narrow for the passage of carts, it was enlarged in 1737.

So many eras, so many names...

The main gate of the city, it was named in this way in homage to the proclamation of the Republic on September 4, 1870. Equipped with a drawbridge just like the Pousterloun Gate, its original name of “Gate of the Holy Cross” was in reference to a chapel that was erected near the latter. It was also called Porte d'Avignon.

The passage of the French Revolution

During this significant event in the history of France, a revolutionary climbed to the top of the door, with the aim of demolishing the door using a pick... He lost his balance and fell: seriously injured, he said that he was dying happy, because it was for freedom.

During the Revolution, a tricolour flame and Phrygian cap were erected at the top of the door. Today, we can see a sculpture, recently added, representing this flame surmounted by a Phrygian cap, thus recalling this essential period in history.
