The Avignon Gate is one of the most important monuments in the city of Monteux. Before the ramparts were destroyed in 1840, it allowed you to enter or leave the city center. Walled in 1695 and then completely destroyed, the city then decided to rebuild it shortly after following the plans of Mignard, painter of the nobility and King Louis XIV. The one we see today is therefore not the original door. The appearance of the latter in our time is not as flattering as when it was rebuilt. It was decorated with sculptures of the Pope's arms and those of Monteux, but they were broken in 1792.
Around the Porte d'Avignon there are also remains of the city ramparts, as well as a fountain among the many that can be found in the center of Monteux.
