We owe the presence of madder in the County to Hovhannès Althounian, known as Jean Althen, Armenian, who introduced it and developed its cultivation in the dry marshes called 'paluds'. The latter saw the appearance of numerous mills in Garance. This initiative brought prosperity to the territory for over a century.
In the 20th century, a statue was already erected in the village, but under Nazi occupation, it completely disappeared. Attached to this symbol, in the early 2000s, the city announced a project to put a statue back in place by taking into account the opinions of the inhabitants and it is the work of the sculptor Marcella KRATZ that will be selected among the participation of several artisans.
Today, a beautiful statue of Jean Althen sits on the square in Althen-des-Paluds, recalling the incredible history of La Garance and honoring this benefactor whose name the village chose.
