A museum of history and traditions

Created in 1860 in a charming house of the city center of Pernes-les-Fontaines, the drapery store enjoyed excellent years until the Second World War and then with the arrival and fast development of ready-to-wear in the 1950s which definitively condemned the store to close its doors.

Appreciated by the inhabitants and the city, the store opened back its doors in 1992 with its original shelves and its furniture loaded with old fabric offcut, household linen, blankets, old shirts, haberdashery items and various items necessary for sewing.

An exhibition of ancient costumes

It is now a public place for visits and exhibitions, as the first floor features three rooms showcasing the Comtadine costume in all its glory. Costumes from the early and late 19th century, representing peasant women, farmers, artisans, and middle-class women, are displayed in showcases, one of which is dedicated to the clothes worn by wealthy Perne women dressed in the fashion of Paris. Cashmere shawls, a collection of quilted petticoats, headscarves, men's vests, neck handkerchiefs, as well as various accessories such as keyboards, watches, bags, purses, clogs, and many other clothes and accessories are visible in this place

On the second floor there is a large sewing workshop open from October to June.

The management and animation of the house is provided by the "Conservatoire du Costume Comtadin", which will surprise you with this tribute to the meticulous work of seamstresses, in the time when houses were lit by candlelight!
