In the 14th century, when they settled in Avignon, the Popes planted the vines of the first vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. John XXII, who chose this city as the summer residence of the papacy, particularly liked the nectar that was made there and gave it the name 'Pope's wine'.
