Built in the 14th century, it allowed residents to take shelter and guaranteed the protection of the historic center as many cities did at that time. This door faces south-east, opening onto the old road to Isle, St Didier and La Roque-Sur-Pernes.
The opening was built in a massive square tower crowned with machicolations, unfortunately this tower lost its parapet and crenellation over the centuries. On the inner side, you can still observe the chamber from which the harrow was maneuvered, and shelter the soldiers as well as the vault that housed the defenders at the battlements. Large loopholes opened on both sides of the tower. In the 17th century, the Porte Saint-Gilles underwent a repair to its drawbridge, which had already been damaged.
The most attentive may also notice a small construction that seems mysterious: It is in fact a “break” (or rest) of the old pipes led from the Saint Barthélémy spring and distributed in several districts of the city.

Did you know that? In Pernes-les-Fontaines, outside each rampart gate, there is always a fountain that was intended to quench the thirst of travelers, inhabitants and animals.

Book 'Pernes-les-Fontaines'
An irreplaceable summary of the history of this village in which, over the centuries, wars, rabies, plague, and enfeodations could in no way affect the beauty, the art of living and the vitality of Pernes. By putting the past into the present, this book on the city of Pernes invites us to travel. A journey through history, a time machine, it takes us through the streets, into the heart of the fountains, into the daily life of a past where centuries speak of their legend. Through the monuments and events that illustrated this small town from Comtadine, the authors have perpetuated, in their own way, the oral tradition by reviving the country chapels surrounded by the legend of their patron saints, the flour and oil mills, the flour and oil mills, the picturesque bories and the ancient hotels of the old town that proudly taunt time.
