History of the Carpentras Canal
Built between 1853 and 1869 on the initiative of Louis Giraud, Pernois and mayor of the city on several occasions, this canal was built in order to protect the agricultural land of Comtat Venaissin from major droughts and thus provide water (which comes from the Durance and Rhône rivers) with water (which comes from the Durance and the Rhône) to a large part of the Vaucluse territory.
69km long, this structure is one of the most important in the department. It provides the necessary water to local producers and residents of surrounding towns, but it is also a superb place for walking and exploring, between the plains of Mont Ventoux, the Monts de Vaucluse and the Luberon.
Several hiking trails
The Carpentras Canal is an ideal path for a peaceful stroll without worrying about cars. From the Iéro square and car park in Pernes-les-Fontaines, you will be able to reach the Saint-Antoine district at the entrance of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (about 12 km) and also go as far as Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (about 17 km). On the course, you will be able to enjoy the fauna and flora that are so emblematic of Provence in the heart of nature in some places.
There are also 3 hiking loops that take part of the Carpentras Canal and then lead you into the Pernoise countryside to discover a little more the landscapes of the Mont Ventoux Regional Natural Park:
- 5km hike: easy level - 1h - +71m of altitude difference
- 10km hike: medium level - 2h30 - +127m of altitude difference
- 14km hike: medium level - 3h30 - +174m of altitude difference
The markings are displayed along the canal for these 3 hiking trails, however there are no signs for the route leading you to Isle-sur-la-Sorgue or Fontaine de Vaucluse.
For the more sporty: the Piégros trail course (12km - +370m of altitude difference) also runs along the Carpentras Canal for a short distance, about 1km.

Bike and mountain bike tours
In addition to hiking trails, there are also several bike routes for cyclists who want to pedal peacefully along the canal and on the heights of the Monts de Vaucluse.
- 10km mountain bike course - easy level - 1h - +100m of altitude difference
- 20km mountain bike course - difficult level - 2 hours - +420m of altitude difference
- 11km bike route - easy level - 1h15 - from the topoguide (free) 'on the paths of the Carpentras Canal'
