The story of Bédarrides

Discover the history of the village of Bédarrides over the centuries, from its origins to the present day. “The city of seven rivers has more than one story up its sleeve!

The origin of its name, from the Latin 'Bitturitae' the two towers, dates back to a Roman victory. Rome turned it into a villa that she called “Villa Bittorita”.

Bédarrides' birth certificate

The known history of the village of Bédarrides began at the beginning of the 10th century.

A precept granted by the Germanic emperors dated May 16, 908 ceded to the bishop of Avignon the village of Bittorida with its church dedicated to Saint-Étienne.

The charter of Louis Bozon, known as “The Blind One” in the year 911, confirmed to the bishop the possession of the goods he held from the empire.

The bishop and then the archbishops of Avignon remained spiritual and temporal lords of Bédarrides for nearly nine centuries, until the French Revolution.

This small city, which is now so peaceful, participated in the destiny of the Comtat Venaissin: it was in fact in the church Saint-Laurent de Bédarrides that the attachment of the Comtat Venaissin to France was signed in 1791.

Proud of its traditions, Bédarrides expresses its attachment to its roots and its Provençal culture. Here, we relive the Provence of yesteryear during the Horse Fair.
