The Clock Tower is the only vestige of the Castle of the Counts of Toulouse, which was built in the heart of the city in the 12th century. After the departure of the counts around the 17th century, the walls fell into ruins over the years and it was decided to transform the only element still standing into a prison for some time.
The city of Pernes-les-Fontaines never abandoned this Clock Tower since 1764, when a new belfry iron bell tower was installed, the bell was replaced in the 19th century and in 1992 during heritage festivals, a weathercock was put in place representing a cat chasing a mouse, which has become a kind of symbol for artisans and the city!
Today, the Clock Tower, classified as a Historic Monument in 1928, is the tallest monument in Pernes-les-Fontaines.
Did you know: Locals usually use the expression 'High like the Pernes cat' in reference to the weathercock on the bell tower!
