A bit of history...
The Popes settled in Avignon in the 14th century, and planted the vines for the first vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. John XXII particularly appreciated the wine made there: he gave it the name 'Pope's Wine', and designated this city as the summer residence of the papacy.
